When Zhou Chu was young, he had an unruly nature and enjoyed brawling with his peers, causing trouble for the entire village. His father Zhou Fang knew about his son's misconduct but could do nothing to discipline him. One day, the villagers complained: “The mountain tiger, the river dragon, and now Zhou Chu himself are considered three great nuisances.” Upon hearing this, Zhou Chu felt ashamed and decided to change his ways.
He then went up the mountain to kill the tiger and ventured into the river to fight the dragon, spending several days before managing to escape. Returning home, he found that most of the villagers had fled out of fear, leaving only ruins behind. Realizing how much harm he had caused, Zhou Chu sought advice from the hermit Lu Xun on how to improve himself. Lu Xun told him: “A gentleman should gain respect through virtue rather than brute strength. If you can truly repent and reform, you can turn your life around.”
Following this counsel, Zhou Chu devoted himself to studying diligently and cultivating moral integrity, eventually becoming a renowned general. On his deathbed, he left these words: “Throughout my life, I have done no good deeds; I only hope that future generations will lead virtuous lives and not repeat my mistakes.”
